July 27th, 2009Love Your Work
February 9th, 2009
One of the most quoted poems during the month of love is Elizabeth Barret Browning’s “How Do I love Thee? Let me count the ways…”
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth
And height my soul can reach,
When feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, — I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! — and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.
Everyday, hundreds if not thousands of people are losing their jobs because of the global financial crisis.
If you still have work. Thank the Lord for it. Value it and love your job.
How do you love your work? Let me count the ways by which you could show your love for your job.
1) Be present and punctual. Our presence and punctuality are evidences of being a responsible worker. Report for work on time and submit your reports and assignments even before the deadline. It is hard to rely on someone who is always not around.
2) Be productive. Don’t just be present and punctual. Ang sideline, di dapat nakagambala sa ating main line of work. Are you contributing to the revenues of your company? Dapat lang. Be productive.
3) Be a player, a team player. Nurture strong relationships with your team members. That is one way of making yourself valuable in the company. Being a people-person is an asset. It is a trait that we should learn to develop. A good relationship with your team is a strong glue that will help you stick with your company. If you were to choose the people whom you will work with, will you eagerly choose yourself to be part of the team? Show that you love your work by being a team player.
4) Be perceptive and positive. These days, it’s an edge to be in the loop, to be informed and updated. Do you understand the potential impact of the global crisis in your industry? It is good to be perceptive. It is an advantage to know how to read and interpret the signs of the times. But don’t just be perceptive. Sa dami ng mga not-so-good news ngayon, it is imperative that we remain positive. We can be positive because we have a BIG God who remains to be in control.
5) Being prayerful. Do you honestly take time to pray for your company, your boss, your co-workers, and your work? Prayer works! If you love your work, pray for it. Pray that you will always be a blessing in your workplace.
Do you love your work? You should, because many people are losing theirs. Make a conscious effort to value and love your work more. How can we show our love for our work? Let’s count the ways, 1) Be Present and Punctual; 2) Be Productive; 3) Be a team-Player; 4) Be Perceptive and Positive; and 5) Be Prayerful.
Withdrawals and Deposits
January 28th, 2009
About two weeks ago, when I was in Baguio, I ran out of cash. Good thing that my husband always sees to it that he deposits money in my ATM account, kaya kapag naubusan ng cash may mahuhugot kahit papaano. So I rushed to the nearest ATM to make a withdrawal. Oo nga ano, magandang paalala, many times in life and even in our work, gusto lang natin magwithdraw ng magwithdraw. Kaunti lang ang willing na magdeposito.
In life and at work, we need to be willing to give in order to receive. Deposit in order for us to be able to withdraw something.
- Deposit goodwill. How do you establish goodwill with your clients? Do as you promised, deliver on your commitments, do not abuse other people’s trust.
- Deposit time. Never ever think that the time you spend building rapport with others is wasted time. We need to invest time on personal and business relationships. We will not be able to know others if we don’t spend time with them.
- Deposit kindness. “Your kindness is good but I also want in kind!” At tama naman siya, kindness should not just be heard, it should be seen and felt. Kaya kailangan ng in kind para rin maipakita an gating kindness.
- Deposit generosity. Be willing to help a co-worker in need. Be willing to assist a client who is inconvenienced. Be willing to go the extra mile for others.
If you sow, you will reap. If you give, it will come back to you, pressed down, shaken together and running-over. Siksik, liglig, umaapaw.
What It Takes to Win
January 14th, 2009
Last night, my daughter said, “Mama, what dance-able music would I bring to our dance competition in school tomorrow?” Medyo nagpanic ako, because when I read their assignment to think of dance moves and bring a dance-able CD to school, I didn’t realize that it was well, a friendly competition in school.
After completing the steps and practicing several times, Bea said, “I wish I’d win our dance competition in school tomorrow?”
I didn’t mind her comment that much, but when I when to the bathroom, I realized that, “Hey, this is a teachable moment for Bea about what it takes to win!”
So I called Bea and shared with her the following about winning:
“Winning is not something that you wish for. Winning is something that you work hard for.”
- Winning requires your 3 Ps or 3 Ts (Panahon, Pagod at Pera o Time, Talent & Treasure).
- Winning requires hard work & intense discipline.
I had to cut down on my sleeping and recreation time para maglaan ng mas mahabang panahon sa practice. Winning requires sacrifice.
- Winning requires endurance. Walang nagwawagi na agad na umaayaw. The difference between someone who just works hard and someone who wins is this, some of us may be working hard, pero pagnahirapan, umaayaw na.
Driving Lesson
November 26th, 2008
It has often been said that life is a journey. How is your journey in life? How is the journey in terms of your career? Exciting ba o medyo bored ka ngayon? Let me share with you a text message that was sent by my friend and fellow homeschool mom Agay Fabellar. It’s a simple reminder about driving and the things that we cannot do without if we want to reach our destination.
“The road to success is not straight.
There is a curve called Failure,
a loop called Confusion,
speed bumps called Friends,
red lights called Enemies,
and caution lights called Family.
For sure you will experience flats in your Job,
but if you have a spare tire called Determination,
an engine called Perseverance,
an insurance called Faith and
if GOD is your driver,
you will make it to your desired destination called Success.
Sometimes the journey may get bumpy and slow.
But remember, you won’t get from here to there without embarking on a trip.
So don’t forget to fasten your seatbelt and enjoy the ride.”
Ito ang pabaon ko ngayon sa iyo as you go to work. Be a blessing in the workplace today!
6 Things to Learn and 3 Things to Leave
November 20th, 2008
(Source: Salt Cellars by Charles H. Spurgeon)
Six Things to Learn:
- Learn a craft while you are young, that you may not have to live by craft when you are old.
- Learn to be little if you would be great.
- Learn to creep before you leap.
- Learn to hear, and hear to learn.
- Learn to hold your tongue.
- Learn wisdom from the follies of others.
Three Things to Leave:
- Leave a welcome behind you. (Don’t extend your welcome. Don’t abuse the kindness of friends.)
- Leave grunting to hogs and snarling to dogs. (Join the birds in singing thanksgiving and praise to God.)
- Leave tomorrow till tomorrow. (Matthew 6:34)
Be a blessing in the workplace today!
Choose to Focus on the Positive
November 4th, 2008
What were the thoughts that entered your mind when you woke up today? Positive ba o negative? Ooops, ooops, ooops. Panaginip lang yan ano, huwag mong totohanin.God has really given you a very powerful mind. Your toughts affect your actions for the day. If we will focus on the negative, kahit gaanong kaganda ng isang bagay o tao, may makikita at makikita pa rin tayong pwedeng ipintas dito.
Choose to focus on the positive. Mayroon akong nabasang inspiring article from Lighthouse, the official newsletter of the Sukat Evangelical Church. The article is a list of God’s promises and words of encouragement to counter the negative self-talk that we usually dwell on. It begins with this statement: “For all the negative things we have to say to ourselves. God has a positive answer for it.”
You say: “It’s impossible.”
God says: All things are possible. (Luke 18:27)
You say: “I’m too tired.”
God says: I will give you rest. (Mattew 11:28-30)
You say: “I can’t go on”
God says: My grace is sufficient. (2 Cor. 12:9 & Ps. 91:15)
You say: “I can’t figure things out.”
God says: I will direct your steps. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
You say: “I can’t do it.”
God says: You can do all things. (Philippians 4:13)
You say: “I’m not able.”
God says: I am able. (2 Cor. 9:8)
You say: “It’s not worth it.”
God says: It will be worth it. (Romans 8:28)
You say: “I can’t forgive myself.”
God says: I forgive you. (1 John 1:9 & Romans 8:1)
You say: “I can’t manage.”
God says: I will supply all your needs. (Phil. 4:19)
You say: ” I’m afraid.”
God says: I have not given you a spirit of fear. (2 Tim. 11:7)
You say: “I’m always worried and frustrated.”
God says: Cast all your cares on me. (1 Peter 5:7)
You say: “I’m not smart enough.”
God says: I give you wisdom. (1 Corinthians 1:30)
You say: “I feel alone.”
God says: I will never leave you nor forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5)
You say: “Nobody really loves me.”
God says: I love you. (John 3:16 & John 13:34)
Choose to focus on the positive. Take your daily dose of inspiration and positive outlook from God’s word.
Be a blessing in the workplace today!
